Green Floor Finishing Options
According to the EPA (environmental protection agency), “indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air and is considered to be one of the top 5 hazards to human health.” Varnishes and paints are at the top of the list on these hazards.
In response to a comment on the Bamboo Wood Flooring post, I am going to explore different options to finish your wood floors, without using harsh varnishes. As mentioned in the post, Linseed oil is one that is used.
Linseed Oil is used as a product is absorbed into the pores of the wood, as opposed to covering it. This oil does not get hard, but does create a resistance to denting, and scratches are easily fixed. It is not recommended that you use this oil on outdoor furniture as it is linked to causing high levels of mildew.
Poppyseed oil has very similar attributes as linseed oil, but is known to have better color stability. Applying linseed oil over poppyseed is not recommended as it may cause cracking.
Tung Oil is also another option. This oil when applied has a slight golden hint, but does not darken over time like linseed. For people with nut allergies, severe reactions can occur, so it is not suggested for everyone for this reason.
There are products on the market that combine several types of natural oils to create a very fine product. Do some research to see if one of these is the proper fit for you.
There are low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) varnishes, but make sure you do your research because there are still hazards in products that claim to have low-VOC levels.
